Remember this classic title? Dragon's Lair was the first FMV game to hit the arcades almost 20 years ago. The PS2 console finally has the horsepower to deliver perfect video, video that is better than laser disk quality. Being superior, you can actually see artificating and flaws in the original laser disk conversion. If you do not know, Dragon's Lair is a game that has you take control of the lead character "Dirk the Daring" battling your way to save the princess "Daphne." Classic scenario, played out in a unique way. Because Dragon's Lair is a video, gameplay was sacrificed for graphics. Controlling your character is composed of timed movements that are more general controls found in modern games. For instance, you'll see your character walk into a room and a monster will throw a sword at you. The only clear way to escape would be if Dirk jumped to the right. There is about a half second window of opportunity where you have to tap right on the controller. A few seconds later you'll have another chance to move one of four ways, or hit the action button to use your weapon. Overall the controls are extremely simplistic. Using the unlimited continues the game offers, I was able to beat Dragon's Lair in about 2 hours. The toughest board was clearly the last level, facing the Dragon himself. The sequence was like a long "Simon Says" game, but after dying a few dozen times, I was able to pull off the win. If not for the continues, this game would be near impossible for you to beat. I can see how this game was a quarter muncher in the arcades. Dragon's Lair is essentially a perfect version of the arcade, complete with an interview with its inventor. While this is definitely the "collector's version" of this game, it is apparent that the gameplay is as antiquated as it's complexity. Digital Leisure did an excellent job in porting this to DVD, it's just that the game itself is outdated. On the positive side, it 's an easy game to pick up and you won't be reading the instruction manual for hours trying to figure things out. Priced at a point lower than most PS2 games, Dragon's Lair may be fun for those looking for something simple, but hardcore gamers will get bored very quickly. reviewed by Todd Alexander |
