Myth
the Fallen Lords was a fantastic game that expanded the real time strategy (RTS) genre by accentuating the rich strategy of troop formations and unit management.  Myth 2 Soulblighter would be anticipated by many in the industry, due to the high caliber standard set by the original title.

Bungie decided to stick to its own guns with Myth 2, and concentrate on providing intense strategy rather than follow the crowd that typically has a base management side.  The level design is truly some of the best looking I have seen to date.  With the use of 3D acceleration, the boards seem to come to life.  Villages look totally realistic with fences, random wildlife running about, battlefield scar #1and worn pathways giving you hints as to where the next town may be.  Complimenting the realistic scenery is realistic ambient sound, which changes with the many different boards.  While on the subject of realistic, it would be an injustice not to mention the game physics.  Capturing high ground is important for attaining an edge with your archers.  With this advantage, you will be able to cut the enemy down before they are in range to do damage to your forces.  You will want to keep your soldiers in check while your archers fire though, because friendly fire is a part of war, and if you are not careful, your other units will get in the path of the arrows.  The dwarfs will provide a key component to your force, by adding the ability to do mass damage by hurling bombs into enemy formations.  These bombs can decimate your opponents as well as your own front line units, so be sure you know where your dwarfs are at all times.

battlefield scar #2The gameplay is as good as the original, and even takes it a step further by adding several unique units, and a more interactive battlefield.  You can use the terrain to setup awesome ambushes on the enemy.  Because of the new units, combat can seem a bit intensive, with all the micro-managment you will need to do (at times).  Luckily, you can adjust the speed of the game in real time, so if things get hairy, just slow the game down a tad.  The formations play an important factor in the battle outcome too.   You can chose between 10 different unit formations for your different unit types to be in, some working better than others in certain situations.

Myth 2 is presented with all the added trimmings.  An excellent story line is complimented by high quality animation and narration between missions.  An extremely powerful level editor is included, for those of you that want to create your own maps.  Free play on Bungie's gaming service, "bungie.net", will allow you to play either cooperatively or competitively with friends or strangers from around the world.  You can save movies of your gaming, so that you can go back and watch the battle again, in any variety of angles you chose.  Support for all major 3D accelerators and 3D sound cards will give the game an incredible ambience.  Over all, Myth 2 is what other game companies should set their standards to, because everything a gamer could want is included in this well presented game.

Do I recommend Myth 2?  Without a doubt, yes!  From a pure gaming standpoint, Myth 2 is fantastic.  Gameplay requires deep strategy, and the player has many choices at his control.  Choosing where you want to fight is as important as the tactics themselves.  With Myth 2, you get it all... a rich storyline enhanced with nice cinemas and narration, multiplayer support, bungie.net, tools to create your own maps, and support for modern 3d cards.  Myth 2 will be a fine addition to anyone's library, whether you want a change of pace from other genres, or even want something new in the RTS genre.

Myth 2 screen shot As good as the graphics were in original Myth, the realism and level design are that much better in the sequel.  Realistic villages and castles will be seen as you quest through the game in search of Soulblighter.
Myth 2 screen shot You will traverse blood stained snow covered battlefields, showing the scars of war left by the soldiers of good and evil.  In this mission, one of the few returning characters, King Aldric, leads his troops into combat once again.
Myth 2 screen shot The formation you select for your troops will not only mean the difference between winning and losing, but better formations will provide better results.  This is the beauty of this game, the rich strategy needed to destroy your opposition.  In this picture, your archers flank your main force of soldiers.  A dwarf is also seen hurling a fire bomb onto several satchels laid down before the battle, ensuring the odds will be in your favor.

To hear ambient sounds from the Myth2 game, you will need Real Player G2.
