SONY - E3 2002
Sony had their typical booth
this year with rows of 3rd party PS2 games surrounding their perimeter.
The Sony games were displayed in an upper level area with some nifty
looking glass screens. The
pictures were actually being beamed from a mirror reflected projectors,
but at first everybody thought the thin glass walls had some ultra thin
LCD or something. They also had sodas with game stations below the
upper level and a SOCOM tournament
in what reminded me of The Weakest Link game show. The big broadband
announcement ended up a very unnoticeable force at the show. Madden
03 supported it and it worked well until it dropped my connection in the
3rd quarter. Another game called "Hardware" was a very
basic twisted metal game where a few different kind of vehicles are stuck
in an arena and get weapon power-ups. The winner is presented after
a timer expires and the total 'frag' count is tallied. Basically it
is a "hey, we have online play, look what we can do' kind of game...
more of a technology demo that a game you really want to play. Final
Fantasy XI was a flop too. Maybe next year for quality broadband
support.

Primal -Sony's
best 1st party developed game in my opinion was a game called
Primal. It was a gothic/dark game that consisted of a girl who
is part demon and her gargoyle pet. Well, I don't know if it
was a pet, but it followed her around. I played a level where
the gargoyles spirit possessed a huge stone statue and then I fought
a golem in an arena. It was actually very fun and the game is
presented well with story and dialog and detailed quality
graphics. Different areas the female lead character would show
more of her demon side than others, so I don't know if she was
slowly morphing into one in the game or if she got that way by
taking damage. This PS2 title should be ready this fall. |

Sly Cooper
- Sly Cooper is a cartoon
like game oozing with cell-shading. Unlike Zelda,
I really enjoyed the way this game used it. The
graphics were highly detailed and the game played sort of
like a Mario clone. The level I played was very
unique and had a maze like level with a guardian at the
top of this hill firing a laser beam at you. As long
as you kept moving, the beam was always one step
behind. The graphics in this game are very good, too
bad it doesn't have an all-star lead character, then it
would surely sell millions. Regardless, it is a very
good game.

Getaway
- Like Dead
to Rights, this game is following the lead of the Max
Payne/GTA 3 basics. You are what looks like a secret
agent wielding double pistols and have the stealthiness of
a Solid Snake in Metal Gear. You were able to hide around
corners, reload, and pop out from the safety of a wall and
start unloading ammo. It looked awesome! The game
also features driving sequences which reminded me of GTA
3. While the graphics were good, I thought the X-box
'Dead to Rights' did a better job in almost all the
departments, but if you have a PS2, this game is solid and
should be fun.
