Midway - E3 2002
I certainly miss the original
Sonya, Kerri Hoskins. Many E3 ago, she would be my first stop of the
show. Times have changed and so has the gaming industry.
Midway had a handful of games, but not many that really turned your
head. Their long line of Mortal Kombat games seems to have been forgotten
with the release of Mortal Kombat 4, but a great graphics engine and some
pretty screenshots for MK5 (Alliance) had me searching out Midway once
again.

Mortal Kombat: Deadly
Alliance (5) - The screenshots of this game are phenomenal.
I was pleasantly surprised by this game and thought this might be
the game to bring me back to the fighting game genre. The
animation of the characters in the game are pretty good. There
were tons of moves and combos and with a flick of the R1 button you
switch to a new combat style, some are different stances and some
are with weapons. The weapons give you range and almost seemed
unfair at times, like when I was using Shang-Tsung and his 7 foot
staff. Sadly, this version had no familiar moves that brought
the MK series to its popularity. I was unable to throw a
harpoon with scorpion, throw an ice blast with Sub-Zero, etc.
These are necessary for me to want to play the game, so perhaps it
was a little too early. The game looks nice and with a lot
more work could be a great game. I'm not sure if it
will be in time for this holiday season, if it is it may be a rushed
product. Time will tell. |
