Once a year the electronic entertainment industry meets to show the world what advances have been made in the world of computer and video game technology. The year 2000 has brought many advances in 3D, for home and console. The Sega Dreamcast and Sony Playstation 2 can deliver awesome graphics and great games for roughly 10% the cost of a new PC. With Nintendo's Dolphin gaming system and Microsoft's X-box looming around the corner, we will be in an era where the home gaming industry is reaching an all time high in terms of competition and of technology. What does all this mean? Systems and games will be more advanced than ever, and they will be more competitively priced. For the first time ever gamers will have the opportunity to play their console systems on the internet. The Sega Dreamcast has a built in modem and many games at the show were internet ready. Sony has announced a modem and a hard drive for their PSX 2, and you know Microsoft's X-box will be internet ready when it is released. The world is being forced to recognize this industry as a real force. This year video game sales will exceed that of the movie industry. The games we play today are not the games we grew up with. Metal Gear Solid 2 from Konami looks better than anything seen before and gives you more of an adrenalin rush than may Hollywood action movies. Today, it is possible that 3D on the PC and on the consoles can rival the CGI animated movies that companies like Disney's Pixar Studios create; in real time, and with interactivity. Things are fantastic now, and they only look like they are getting better. To sum up what was seen on the show floor in the year 2000, there was great achievements in 3D games, a focus on multiplayer gaming, and strong competition. For the first time ever, gamers will be able to play games like Quake 3 over the internet on their Sega Dreamcast against an opponent who is running his game on the PC! Sega proved to the world that they know what it takes to be the industry leader, and the high number of high quality games coming from their corner was impressive. This is an awesome time to be a gamer, and in the grand scheme of things, it is really only the beginning! |
