| Ready 2 Rumble Boxing from Midway is one of the Sega DreamCast's first
games to be released in the United States. Boxing titles in the
past have been mixed. Older games like Nintendo's Punch-Out were
fun to play, but had limited depth because of patterns. Many other boxing games were
not fun to play, and had problems with gameplay, due to the '2-D'
aspects of the game.
Ready 2 Rumble is kind of a different game. There are a couple of options for playing. One of them is single player arcade style, or championship mode. Arcade mode is similar to a standard stand-up arcade fighting game. Chose your fighter, and duke it out against the other fighters. You'll have much more fun in the championship mode, where you chose a starting character, and 'mold' him/her into a champ. You start off with a generally weak fighter, but there are many things you can do to improve the stats of your fighter. Wining money at prize fights will give you the option to buy training options, like weightlifting, speed bag, vitamins, and many more. The variety of training is a bundle of fun in itself. Training is presented as mini-games, testing your reflexes, memorization, and speed. As your stats rise, you are able to compete with more furiousity. The stronger your fighter gets, the more fun the game gets. Once you climb the three 'classes', your fighter is peaked, and is retired. You can save your character to memory card and use it at a later time against friends characters. The other way to play is multiplayer, whether you play in arcade mode or load a saved character. Ready 2 Rumble is too fast paced to be a killer 2 player game. While you may have fun in the short term, there are not enough moves and strategy to keep things interesting for too long. Ready 2 Rumble is a fairly unique game, sort of a hybrid between a fighting game and a 3D Punch-Out game, although there are no patterns to memorize. Wicked hits and counter punches are the name of this game. Overall, Ready 2 Rumble is a fantastic single player game, perfect for relieving stress. The championship mode is perfectly done, making the road to glory a fun one to take. 2 player competition is dry, as there are not enough fighting moves to really have a strategic battle. Soul Calibur or PowerStone will be your game if your looking for 2 player fun. Ready 2 Rumble is definitely a contender for your gaming dollar, and should be highly considered by DreamCast owners. reviewed by Todd Alexander |
