Dynamite Cop

Every now and then a game comes along that is reminiscent of the old days.  Sega's Dynamite Cop is kind of an odd titled action/arcade game, similar to some games you may have played before.  You 'hardcore' gamers will have to go back to the 16-bit era to remember Sega's quality action fighter "Streets of Rage."  Dynamite Cop is similar to that game in that there is a lot of combat, in a punch and kick style format.  There are not a ton of combo moves or complex buttons to memorize, just an old fashioned slugfest.  Of course, the characters and environment are fluidly animated in 3D, resembling Capcom's PowerStone.  Instead of scrolling along levels like in previous 2D games, you go room to room in Dynamite Cop.  Each room is colorful and filled with goodies.  You have the ability to jump onto things like tables and utilize items as weapons.  You can pick up an enemies gun, throw chairs, fire bazookas, and even throw dinner rolls (in the restaurant)!

Combat is relatively simple.  You have a punch, kick , and a jump button.  Enemies come at you from all sides, so sometimes you will have to throw a couple punches one direction, turn and dish out some kicks to another enemy, turn around again, pick up your opponent, and throw him/her at the other baddies.  It is much simpler to play that a new fighting game, but I think that's what makes it fun.  In between every few levels, there is a special sequence that tests your speed.  You'll see you character running through a hallway and the words "CAUTION" will appear.  That is you cue to get ready, in which you will only have about a one second window to press the proper button or direction.  Then the screen may say "KICK!"  If you hit the button correctly, quick enough, you will surprise your enemy with a jump kick, rather than being taken by surprise.  Dynamite Cop supports two players at once, so you can slug away with your friend, just like if you were playing at an arcade.  Dynamite also has a 2 player versus mode.

Graphically, the characters could probably look a little bit more detailed, but the fast frame rate and nice action will help you overlook that.  The only major drawback could be the difficulty.  While the computer puts up a fair challenge, using a handful of continues will have you completing this game in a brief amount of time.  Luckily, there are a couple of little details that will keep the game from getting stale.  Your first mission lets you chose where you want to start, and you are given three options.  Each option has a separate path to the end of the first level.  Also, there are hidden items in the game that you have to find to unlock special features, like a photo gallery of the characters within the game.  I should also mention that there is a bonus game called "Tranquilizer Gun", which is an arcade perfect representation of an 1980 Sega arcade standup.  This bonus game will entertain you for a few minutes.

Dynamite Cop is a fun game that will appeal to gamers that want something a little retro, but without sacrificing graphics or presentation.  This game is very arcadey, which I think will help sell this title.  If you like the old "beat em up" games like Streets of Rage or X-Men (arcade), then you will enjoy this game.  Dynamite Cop is a solid game that is fun to play.
